BEGINNER'S GUITAR SCHOOL
Hello everyone. Nils Lofgren here. I’d like to see if there’s any interest out there in a series of downloadable video guitar lessons for beginners. There’s four, one hour intermediate lessons available at www.nilslofgren.com already and I’d like to get your response to an idea for beginners. Often through the years, people of all ages have expressed a great interest in learning simple, basic rock-n-roll guitar but have said they have no musical talent and felt that excluded them from the possibility. WRONG!!! To play an instrument professionally and make a living you do need a degree of talent (and luck, breaks, etc.!) but to play for fun, all you need is a love of music, some practice and a good teacher. Don’t let anyone tell you different! I benefitted from 9 intense years of classical accordion studies before I picked up the guitar as a hobby. Thanks to a few months of lessons from some great teachers (Tom Lofgren, Scottie Ball and Bill Singer) and a lot of practice, I’ve gotten pretty good. Anyway, I’d like to share the adventure with you if there’s enough interest.
Here’s how it would go. I’d coach and advise you how to get a guitar and tuner to tune it. I plan to keep the learning fun and exciting focusing on learning great, classic rock songs while teaching a combination of chords and lead exercises. The goal would be the same as mine still is. Work on playing rhythm and lead to any and all great songs while having a blast and staying excited and engaged. The trick is to learn to play music you love while navigating the practice to get your hands doing unfamiliar things. I promise even Jimi Hendrix had a learning curve. I spent hours a day unsuccessfully trying to play a “bar” chord for months before my hands mysteriously were able to do it one surprising morning. I know a lot of shortcuts and music still remains my hobby so I think I could make it fun for you.
Learning great rock songs (including Bruce Springsteen songs for all you fans), how to play and improvise rock, blues, country and melodic leads, the lessons would be about one hour every two weeks. I’d recommend 20 to 30 minutes of practice 4 or 5 days a week but the goal is to learn at your own pace and enjoy the journey with no pressure! I’d recommend starting with an acoustic guitar and adding an electric guitar eventually, but there’s no wrong way to navigate the gift of music as a hobby and source of enjoyment and you can learn on any decent guitar of your choice. I’d also be happy to hear your comments and requests as we go, and try to incorporate them into the lessons. I still find it an incredible emotional and spiritual relief in these crazy times to hold and play a guitar for any period of time. No tests, no pressure, learn at your own pace and enjoy the journey. How does that sound to you? Let us know. I think it could be a great and rewarding adventure for you.
